High power rockets sometimes need one or more metal plates as a part of their design.  Typically an aluminum thrust plate or motor retainer plate are needed.  In some cases an aluminum centering ring or bulkhead may be needed.  There is an on-line shop that will fabricate precision metal plates at very reasonable prices.  Front Panel Express specializes in aluminum panels for electronics equipment.  Usually such panels need precision machining in order to mount switches, indicators and connectors.  However, there is no restriction on the shape of the panel, so it is possible to design round plates that work great in rocketry applications.  Some examples are shown below.

The Front Panel Express design software can be downloaded for free from their web site.  It is very easy to use.  It allows you to specify the material, the thickness and the external dimensions of the panel.  After that you specify where holes or other machining operations need to be done. This includes threaded holes if required.  You can even have the panel engraved or printed with lettering.  You can also get an instant price quote right from the software.  The quote is itemized so that you can see the cost of each and every feature in your design. Once your design is ready, you can submit it on-line using the same software program.  They offer turn-around times ranging from a few days to about two weeks.  Faster turn-around costs more but the software shows you all those options along with all the shipping options. Their product quality and precision are excellent.  It doesn't get any easier or any more convenient!

Examples of metal plates fabricated by Front Panel Express

This is a 4mm thick aluminum motor thrust plate that is 3.900" in diameter.  It has a center hole for a 54mm motor tube.  It has 8 small holes 0.14" in diameter.  It is clear anodized and even has a small engraving on it to label it.  The cost was $23.61 for one.  (It drops to $16.53 for 20 or more of them.)

This is also a 4mm thick aluminum thrust plate that is 3.900" in diameter.  It has a center hole for a 75mm motor tube.  The price was $24.70.

This is an example of a 3.9" bulkhead that is 3mm thick and has a number of different sized holes for mounting  components (not shown) inside a rocket.  This was $18.59.

Another example of a 3.9" aluminum bulkhead with various precision holes through it.  This is also 3mm thick and was $17.88

Of course it is also possible to use the services of Front Panel Express to fabricate actual front panels for rocketry applications.  Launch system controllers are a good example.

This is a control panel for a custom designed cluster motor launch system.  It is gold colored anodized aluminum 2.0 mm thick and has  engraved lettering with  black ink in-fill.  This panel was rather expensive because it has a lot of special machining done on the back side to accommodate some of the special switches and connectors.   It was $120.

This is that same control panel after it was mounted and assembled in the finished product.

Another example of a 2mm thick gold color anodized aluminum control panel for a single pad launch controller. It also has engraved lettering with black ink in-fill.  It was $48.

The single pad control panel assembled into its case.  The unit is shown here switched-on and ready to launch!
